The house that currently stands on this site was built by Evaristo Carazo, who was the president of Nicaragua in the 1870s.  Originally the house was one storey.

Subsequently one of the sons of President Carazo constructed the second storey that currently exists between the first and second courtyards.  However, the adjacent neighbor, Gabriel Lacayo, objected because it was possible to see into his principal courtyard and corridors, and Sr. Lacayo commenced legal action, as this was not permitted then (nor is it currently permitted).  This made Don Evaristo furious, and he reviewed the law and found a loophole – even though two storey houses had to be built so that there would be no view into a neighbor’s property, such was not the case with houses of three storeys or more.

Don Evaristo then built a third storey – which consisted of a small balcony accessed by a manual elevator.  It is said that Don Evaristo used to ascend in the elevator each afternoon to mock his neighbor.

The swimming pool patio used to be called “El Bosque” (the forest).

In 1981, the house was confiscated by the Sandinistas; the former owners say that all of their furniture and personal possessions in the house were taken by the Sandinistas as well.  The house was converted in the decade of the 1980’s into the offices of the Health Ministry for the Fourth Region of Nicaragua.  We have been told that more than two hundred people used to work in the house daily when the house was the Health Ministry offices.

In the early 1990s, following the election of Violeta Chamorro, the house was returned to its former owners.

The current owner, a North American investor, purchased the property in 2004 and has done extensive renovation and modest remodeling to convert it into the Mansion de Chocolate Hotel.
