In the first garden located within the walls of Mansion de Chocolate we have 4 small cacao trees. We were overjoyed recently to see that that the trees were flowering.  ChocoMuseo, which is located within the hotel, was also very excited. The most interesting thing about the flowers of the cacao tree is that they grow right on the trunk and on the tree limbs. It is unlikely that the flowers will be pollinated however. The flowers are so small that they need special little flies called midges to do the pollinating and midges grow on the forest floor in the leaf litter from the trees. We try to have good leaf litter here in the hotel but ultimately our interior gardens aren’t the forest. Nonetheless, we’re hoping!
